Asfalto Sicuro®: Detection of Road Defects
Asfalto Sicuro® goes beyond traditional road monitoring systems by offering a precise, automated solution to detect and classify a wide range of road defects, ensuring safer and more durable infrastructure. Each defect type carries specific risks that impact road safety, vehicle performance, and maintenance costs. Here are the key defect types identified by the system and why addressing them is crucial:

Potholes are depressions or holes in the road surface caused by the degradation of asphalt layers. These defects can damage vehicles, especially tires and suspensions, and pose a serious risk to cyclists and motorcyclists. Timely detection and repair prevent the rapid expansion of potholes and reduce the risk of accidents.

Longitudinal Cracks: Run parallel to the road centerline and often indicate structural weaknesses. Left untreated, these can allow water infiltration, accelerating pavement deterioration.

Transverse Cracks: Perpendicular to the road, they result from thermal stresses and can lead to pavement fragmentation.

Alligator Cracks: Resembling a web or scales, these are caused by load-related fatigue and signal the need for immediate intervention to prevent further structural damage.

Crosswalk Assessment

BarrierFree: Accessible Pedestrian Routes and Data Platform
Accessible Pedestrian Routes and Data Platform combines AI, street-level imagery and user feedback to map pedestrian accessibility and provide safer, more comfortable routes for vulnerable users.
The system supports both everyday journeys and strategic planning for cities.

Pedestrian Network Mapping and Accessibility Scoring
Using vehicle-based and other street-level imagery, BarrierFree automatically detects sidewalks, crossings, ramps, slopes and obstacles and estimates sidewalk width. These elements are combined into a geospatial database that scores the accessibility of each street segment for different user profiles (e.g. wheelchair users, older people, parents with pushchairs).

Accessible Route Planning and User Feedback
The BarrierFree navigation service calculates walking routes tailored to the needs of people with reduced mobility and other vulnerable users. It avoids steep slopes, missing ramps and other critical barriers whenever possible. Through the app, citizens can report problems on their routes – such as temporary works or obstacles – feeding fresh information back into the maps and helping the city react faster. Decision-Support Dashboard for Cities For municipalities, BarrierFree offers a web dashboard where maps, filters and indicators highlight critical areas, investment priorities and progress over time.
